TennMesh - East Tennessee Mesh Network

Welcome to the TennMesh Meshtastic Network page, serving the East Tennessee area! Here, you’ll find essential guidelines to ensure our mesh network operates at peak performance. For the most efficient operation, please follow the guidelines listed below.

Device Role Settings

The device role setting determines how your node functions within the network and should be configured to suit your specific situation. Generally, the best settings are CLIENT or CLIENT_MUTE. The ROUTER, ROUTER_CLIENT, and REPEATER roles have been abused and are causing issues for many networks, including ours. These roles should only be used for nodes in areas with excellent coverage, such as mountaintop towers.

If you believe your node’s location warrants a ROUTER or REPEATER role, please contact us through our Discord server at https://discord.gg/XGhftQw9Mt or email thecommschannel@proton.me

Any nodes that are set as ROUTER or REPEATER that we don’t receive a response from or are uncooperative will be added to the ignore list on all infrastructure nodes

Appropriate Device Role Scenarios

Role Scenarios
CLIENT Node on the roof of your house, Node on a tower you have at your house, Node on a tower that only covers your town
CLIENT_MUTE Mobile Node, Indoor node, Node that is generally not in a good location
ROUTER, ROUTER_CLIENT, REPEATER Infrastructure Node on a tower on top of a mountain, Nodes at high elevation capable of covering multiple counties

You can reach these settings by following the steps below to reach the menu:
Android: 3 dots on the top right > Radio Configuration > Device > Role
Apple: Settings > Device > Device Role

Hop Limit/Number of Hops

Please keep the Hop Count at the minimum amount required to reach the infrastructure node closest to you. Start with 3 or 4 and work your way down to the minimum required to reach the infrastructure node closest to you. High hop counts create congestion on the network so please avoid having a hop count over 4 or 5.

You can reach these settings by following the steps below to reach the menu:
Android: 3 dots on the top right > Radio Configuration > LoRa > Hop Limit
Apple: Settings > LoRa > Number of hops
